Scrap Yard Dawgs General Manager, Connie May, announced today the signing of Auburn University and USA Women’s National Team star Kasey Cooper. The infielder’s contract extends through the 2018 season with the Dawgs.
With the signing of Cooper, the Dawgs continue to foster its relationship and support of Team USA; Cooper joins USA Team members Hannah Flippen and Morgan Zerkle on the Dawgs roster. As a member of the USA Women’s National Team in 2016, Cooper and Team USA earned a gold medal in the WBSC Women’s World Championship.
When asked about joining the Dawgs, Cooper said, “I'm very excited to continue my game with the Scrap Yard Dawgs. I get to face great competition, and also help grow the game. It's an honor to be able to play with Team USA and Scrap Yard, and cannot wait to see what the NPF has in store.”
During her career with the Tigers, Cooper was an RBI machine – and in 2017, became the Southeastern Athletic Conference (SEC) all-time leader in RBI with 270. That number puts the Dothan, Ala. native eighth all-time in the NCAA record books. She also leads the Tigers all-time in home runs with 67. In addition, Cooper hit .387 lifetime, landing her on the All-SEC team each of her four years at Auburn.
In 2016, Cooper had her best season in a Tiger uniform, setting seven individual single-season program records and topping the individual career charts in four categories, including RBI (83), home runs (21) and slugging percentage (.880). Cooper finished her junior campaign as the espnW Player of the Year, SEC Player of the Year and as a First-Team NFCA All-American selection.
Cooper led the Tigers to the NCAA Women’s College Word Series in 2015 and 2016 and was named to the All-Tournament team in 2016. As a junior, Cooper set the Auburn record for walks (49) while hitting .391 and was again named to the NFCA All-American team. In her freshman campaign, Cooper hit .418 and was named NFCA Co-Freshman of the Year.
May said Cooper has the chance to be a special player for the Dawgs. “I am very excited to see Kasey in a Dawg uniform! Her proven offensive firepower will be a huge addition to the team and gives us another huge threat at the plate,” May said.
Born Kasey Marie Cooper in Dothan, Ala., Cooper was named the 2013 Alabama Gatorade Player of the year and led Dothan High School to the 6A State Championships in 2011.
